Sony’s HDR-CX7, its smallest high-def camcorder yet, records video to a MemoryStick Pro Duo card.

Sony Corp. has announced its smallest high-definition camcorder to date.

The HDR-CX7, which is due to go on sale in June, records 1080i high-definition video directly to a MemoryStick Pro Duo card. Until now its camcorders have relied on MiniDV tape, DVD discs or hard-disk drives to store video, but the memory card slot and associated electronic take up less space and mean a smaller, lighter camera.

Using a memory card also means that getting video into a PC is as easy as removing the card from the camera and slotting it into a card reader. The video must still be copied to the PC’s hard-disk for viewing, but a software upgrade due mid-year will make it possible to watch video directly from high-speed Pro Duo- or Pro HG-type MemoryStick cards on both a PC and the PlayStation 3.

The flash memory-based recording also helps reduce power consumption and noise over other methods. But it doesn’t come without disadvantages. Memory cards are quite expensive, and users will be able to store only about 30 minutes of video on a 4G-byte card in the camera’s highest quality mode.

Behind the lens is a 3-megapixel image sensor, and the camera can also capture 6-megapixel still images, Sony said. Other features include a 10x optical zoom lens and a 2.7-inch wide-screen, touch-sensitive LCD (liquid crystal display) monitor.

The CX7 weighs 450 grams and measures 69 millimeters by 67mm by 129mm. It will cost about US$1,200 in the U.S.

Sony will also begin selling two hard-disk drive-based HD camcorders in June. The HDR-SR7 has a 60G-byte drive and the HDR-SR5 a 40G-byte drive. The SR7 comes with the same 3-megapixel image sensor used in the CX7, while the SR5 uses a 2-megapixel sensor. In the U.S. the cameras will cost $1,400 and $1,100, respectively. Prices and launch dates for other markets have not been announced.

All three camcorders record in the AVCHD format, which was developed by Sony and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. (Panasonic) and uses MPEG4 compression.

On Thursday Sony also announced an update to its Vegas 7 video editing software that adds support for AVCHD files. An upgrade for the consumer “Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Edition 8″ software, adding AVCHD support, will be available from July, Sony said.

New Japanese mobile phones detect motion

April 28th, 2007 admin No comments

Published: Wednesday, April 25, 2007

Some of the latest mobile phones in Japan come with motion sensors that let users detect motion or play action games like those on the Nintendo Wii console.

The D904i from NTT DoCoMo, Japan’s top mobile carrier, contains a tiny motion sensor that detects shaking and tilting, company spokesman Nobuyuki Hatanaka said.

Instead of punching a keypad, users can move the handset like a tennis racket or fishing pole in easy-to-play games, similar to those on Nintendo Co.’s popular Wii.

In the “Tokyo Highway Battle” racing game, users twist the handset like a steering wheel to control driving. In “Skateboard Dash,” the phone can be tilted to control the board’s speed and direction.

Meanwhile, two new phones from Sharp Corp. and Matsushita Electric Industrial use their built-in cameras to detect motion. Users can control a hip-hop dancer by wagging a finger in front of the camera, for example, or throw punches in the air for a boxing match.

DoCoMo warns users not to go overboard with the handsets, however.

“If you swing or swerve too hard, it’ll be hard to keep your eyes on the screen, and you might bother those around you,” Hatanaka said. “We’re talking about somewhat subtler motions.”

Downloading games to play on the go is popular in Japan, where most mobile phone users are signed up for third-generation networks that offer fast data communication. Users download games onto their handsets to play for a set monthly fee.

The new phones are expected to hit Japanese stores in May. There are no current plans for overseas sales.

New DVD player will be compatible with both Blu-ray and HD-DVD

April 17th, 2007 admin No comments

The world’s first DVD player compatible with two rival disc formats is set to launch in the UK.

Called the Super Multi Blue, it plays both Blu-ray and HD DVDs – the next generation replacements for DVDs.

Players for the two rival disc formats launched in the UK last year, prompting comparisons with the battle between Betamax and VHS. The Super Multi Blue – also known as the BH100 – goes on sale next month with a recommended price of £999.

Daniel Aziz, marketing manager at manufacturer LG Electronics, said the launch would end confusion over the two rival DVD formats.

“It gives consumers the freedom to watch either Blu-ray or HD DVDs without being limited to only the films available on each individual format, or being forced to buy two separate players,” he said.

LG Electronics said it was the first manufacturer to launch a “solution” to the format wars.

The new machine’s software plays HD DVD discs and gives access to scene selection via the main menu. Users won’t be able to access some HD DVD interactive menu features such as games. Blu-ray discs can be played as usual.

Tom Bailey, commissioning editor of gadget magazine T3, said: “It is a no-brainer – given that there is no clear winner in the format war it is too risky to choose one at the moment, so why not get a machine that plays both?”

“People thought this was a publicity stunt and it would never come to market because the war between the two format camps is so ferocious.”

But Mr Bailey said the new machine’s £999 price tag made it more expensive than buying one of the cheapest available HD DVD and Blu-ray players put together. LG Electronics said its new machine would initially go on sale at John Lewis and some other stores.

Sony to discontinue the cheap version PS3

April 12th, 2007 admin No comments

When you can’t find the 20GB PS3 at certain retailers, it’s not that much of a story. When the company that makes the console drops it from their store though, that’s something to take note of. You can no longer buy the 20GB PS3 model from the Sony Style store, and it looks like it’s getting harder to find overall. It seems as though the entry-level price for the PS3 was just raised $100. From Gamesindustry.biz:

However, SonyStyle isn’t the only online retailer which has stopped selling the 20GB PS3. It’s no longer available via the websites of Best Buy, GameStop or Electronics Boutique.

But the console is still on sale at some retailers, such as Amazon.com.

Keep in mind that the 20GB model was never available in Europe, so this is mainly going to affect those of us in North America, and possibly Japan. This is a shame; the 20GB model of the PS3 wasn’t hobbled in the same way the Core 360 is, it was a valid and full-featured product. While you can track the lower-priced system down at some retailers, once they sell out of available stock, who knows if they’ll get any more?

If you’re interested in the $500 system, I’d buy one now. It looks like it’s only going to get harder to find from here on out.
